In a proactive bid to fortify Nigeria’s digital space against an escalating wave of cyber-attacks, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has released a comprehensive “A-Z” safety guide for telecom consumers. The initiative, spearheaded by the Commission’s Consumer Affairs Bureau, serves as a strategic roadmap for Nigerians navigating the complexities of the digital economy.
As digital adoption accelerates across the federation, the apex telecoms regulator emphasized that individual vigilance remains the first line of defence in the national cybersecurity architecture.

The guide arrives at a critical juncture when financial fraud and identity theft hav e become sophisticated, often targeting unsuspecting internet users. According to the Commission, “By following these A-Z tips, consumers can significantly reduce the risk of cyber threats and protect their online identity.”
The ‘Alphabet’ of Digital Defence
The NCC’s advisory breaks down complex cybersecurity protocols into relatable, actionable steps. Key highlights from the manual include the mandatory adoption of Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)—the ‘E’ and ‘T’ of the guide—which adds an essential secondary layer of security beyond traditional passwords.
For technical safety, the Commission urged users to prioritize ‘F’ (Firewall Protection) and ‘K’ (Keeping Antivirus Software Updated). In a move to address the common habits of Nigerian internet users, the ‘W’ and ‘S’ sections of the guide warn against the use of public Wi-Fi for sensitive transactions, advising instead the use of encrypted private networks.
The regulator also introduced the ‘Z’ principle: Zero Trust. This philosophy encourages users to maintain a cautious stance toward every online interaction, questioning the legitimacy of senders and requests for sensitive information before engagement.
The Commission further advised Nigerians to “X-out” suspicious emails and maintain “Network Security” as a daily habit.
