NCC Report Links Network Quality to Phone Battery Drain, Overheating

In a revealing addition to its Fourth Quarter 2025 Industry Performance Report, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has detailed the direct impact of network signal strength on consumer hardware. The findings suggest that for millions of Nigerians, poor network quality is not just a source of frustration, but a primary cause of accelerated battery degradation and device overheating.

The report explains a technical phenomenon known as “power ramping,” where mobile devices are forced to increase their radio frequency (RF) output to maintain a connection in areas with weak or fluctuating signals. According to the NCC data, smartphones operating in “marginal signal zones”—frequently found in rural areas and indoor urban “black spots”—consume up to 40 percent more battery power than those on stable, high-density networks.

This constant search for a stable tower puts an immense strain on the device’s Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC). The Commission noted that in regions where download speeds dropped significantly—such as the identified rural pockets where speeds fell to 8 Mbps—users reported a 25 percent faster discharge rate compared to those in 4G-dense urban centers like Lagos and Abuja.

Thermal Stress and Device Longevity

Beyond battery drain, the report highlights a growing concern regarding device temperature. High-speed data tasks, such as video streaming or large file transfers, generate internal heat. However, when these tasks are performed over an unstable or congested network, the device’s processor and modem must work harder to manage “packet retransmissions.”

The NCC’s “5G Reality Check” section noted that in areas where 5G coverage is intermittent, devices often get trapped in a “ping-pong” effect—constantly switching between 5G, 4G, and 3G. This frequent handoff causes significant thermal spikes, with some devices reaching temperatures 15 percent higher than the manufacturer’s optimal operating range.

The Commission warned that prolonged exposure to such heat, combined with Nigeria’s ambient tropical climate, can lead to permanent hardware damage and shortened device lifespans.

Impact Across Operators

The report suggests that operators with more consistent “baseline” connectivity, such as Glo and MTN, offer a more “battery-friendly” experience in their core coverage areas. Conversely, in regions where T2 or Airtel signals were localized or fluctuating, the lack of seamless “handoffs” between base stations was cited as a major contributor to device stress.

Regulatory Advice for Consumers

As a result of these findings, the NCC has urged consumers to utilize Wi-Fi where available in indoor dead zones and to avoid data-heavy tasks when signal bars are low.

“Our goal is to move the industry toward ‘Quality of Experience’ that protects the consumer’s hardware as much as it provides them with data,” the report concluded.

The Commission also has vowed to prioritize network densification to reduce the “power-hungry” behavior of mobile devices across the country.
