The Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Red Line train will officially commence full passenger operations on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, starting at 6:00 AM from Agbado.
This announcement was made by Engr. Abimbola Akinajo, the Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA).
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu will lead his executive council members and other dignitaries on the inaugural passenger trip, marking the beginning of fee-paying services on the Red Line.
The train services will operate daily from Agbado, adjusting the previous schedule that started from Oyingbo. This change is in anticipation of the upcoming commercial passenger operations.
Engr. Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo explained that the new timetable was a result of data gathered during various tests, including those conducted with non-paying passengers. The adjusted schedule prioritizes trips originating from Agbado, where many riders live and work in areas like Ikeja, Oshodi, and Lagos Island.
For passengers whose journeys end on Lagos Island, buses will be available at the Oyingbo bus terminal for onward travel.
It’s worth noting that the infrastructure for the Red Line train was commissioned by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on February 29, 2024. The first phase of the Red Line spans 27 kilometers and includes eight stations: Oyingbo, Yaba, Mushin, Oshodi, Ikeja, Agege, Iju, and Agbado.
